India will take on Sri Lanka in the second T20I of the three-match series at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Thursday, January 5. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra feels that the remaining two matches are very important for Shubman Gill and that a shorter format is not ideal for him.
Shubman Gill made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka and managed only seven runs off five balls. India beat Sri Lanka by two runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, January 3, to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The 23-year-old was caught just in front of the wickets while attempting a pull against Maheesh Theekshana’s bowling.

These Are Very Important Matches For Shubman Gill – Aakash Chopra
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Akash Chopra opined that Shubman Gill is more suited to the longer formats of the game. The former Indian opener said that there is a possibility that Gill will lead Team India in Test and ODI cricket in the future.
“I feel these are very important matches for Shubman Gill. You might say that he just made his debut and you are saying that these are important games. They are important because I am willing to put my hand up and say that when I see Shubman Gill, I see him as a long-format player. The way he plays, T20 cricket is not ideal for him,” Aakash Chopra said.

“I see him playing Test cricket for India for many years, he might become the captain as well. He will play ODI cricket for India for many years. He might eventually become the captain there as well,” he added.
Chopra said that Gill should take advantage of the opportunities. He said that he has no complaints against Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav.
He said, “So he (Gill) has just made his debut, but he will have to make the best of his opportunities. He will have to prove naysayers like me wrong. Ishan Kishan is batting well, so I will not say anything to him. Suryakumar Yadav got out once, will not get out every time.”
