The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the limited-overs squad for a white-ball series against Sri Lanka, which will include three T20Is and as many ODIs. Hardik Pandya will lead the team, with Suryakumar Yadav as his deputy. The absence of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant from the T20 squad is a big surprise.
The BCCI has not made an official statement on whether the players have been dropped or rested for the series. Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir believes that there is nothing wrong if the Indian team management decides to look beyond the experienced trio in the T20s. However, there should be clear communication between players and management.
The Younger Generation Can Go On To Achieve That Dream – Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir stated that the management must have clear plans ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, which will be held in the United States and the Caribbean. He believes there is no need to panic if the selectors drop certain players, but there needs to be more clarity on the status of players and their place in the team.
“There should be clarity. There should be good communication between the selectors and these players. If the selectors have decided to look beyond these guys, so be it. I think a lot of countries have done that,” Gautam Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo during an interaction.
“We make too much of a hue and cry when the selectors and management look beyond certain individuals. Ultimately, it’s not about the individuals, but how you want to go about your plans for the next [T20] World Cup [in 2024], because you want to go in there and win it. If these guys haven’t been able to achieve that, I think you never know. People like Suryakumar, the younger generation can go on to achieve that dream,” he added.
I’d Like To Try To Get Guys Like Prithvi Shaw, Rahul Tripathi And Sanju Samson – Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir believes that the comeback of senior players like Rohit, Rahul, and Kohli will be difficult for now as they will not fit into India’s scheme for the 2024 T20 World Cup. The southpaw said there are other players who are capable of playing fearless cricket and deserve to be in the mix in the future.
“Personally, if you ask me, it looks tough. People like Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan should all be in the mix. Hardik Pandya is there, I’d like to try to get guys like Prithvi Shaw, Rahul Tripathi and Sanju Samson into the mix. They can play fearless cricket.”
“We’ve spoken so much about the template and stuff going into the previous [T20] World Cup, that we want to play at a certain template, that we want to play aggressive cricket, but when it came to a crunch game [semi-final against England], all that template went out of the window.”
