Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Gautam Gambhir, who was one of the heroes of India’s 2011 World Cup triumph, has backed the in-form middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav to represent Team India in Test cricket.
Suryakumar Yadav has been lighting up world cricket with his remarkable performances in T20Is since making his international debut in 2021. He has been getting better with each innings and has climbed to the No.1 spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings.

In the series decider third T20I against Sri Lanka in Rajkot on Saturday, January 7, Suryakumar Yadav played unarguably one of the greatest T20 innings and his knock was filled with some highly astonishing shots. He smashed the Lankan bowlers all over the park and notched up his third T20I ton off 45 balls.
Suryakumar Yadav smoked 112* runs off 51 balls, including 7 fours and 9 sixes, to help Team India post a mammoth 228/5 on the board while batting first.
Meanwhile, former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Gambhir was left amazed by Suryakumar’s extraordinary batting performance and he took to Twitter to state that the time is right to include him in India’s scheme of things in Test cricket.
“What a knock @surya_14kumar! Time to put him in test cricket! #SKYscraper,” former India opening batsman Gautam Gambhir tweeted.

Earlier, former India National Cricket Team head coach Ravi Shastri had also backed the World No.1 T20I batter Suryakumar to bat at No.5 for the side in Test cricket.
“I think he is a three-format player. I know they do not talk about him in Test cricket, but he is a three-format player. This guy can play Test cricket and I’ll tell you what, he can surprise a few. Send him there at number 5 and let him stir it up,” Shastri told the official broadcaster during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.
He’s batting at a different level – Yuzvendra Chahal on Suryakumar Yadav
Speaking after India’s 91-run win in the Rajkot T20I, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal said that Suryakumar has been batting at a different level and he is happy to share the dressing room with a player of Suryakumar’s calibre.
“He’s batting at a different level and I’m happy that I’m in the same team as him,” the star leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal said after the match.
India captain Hardik Pandya also lavished praise on Suryakumar Yadav after the match and said that he is surprising everyone with his performances in the shortest format of the game.
“He (SKY) has been surprising everyone every innings that he is batting. He is just telling us that batting is so easy. If I were bowling to him, I’d be disheartened on seeing his batting.
“You don’t need to tell him anything, he knows what to do. If there is any situation where he is unsure, we have our chats but more often than not, he knows what to do,” Hardik Pandya said.
