The 28-year-old India National Cricket Team right-arm pacer Mohammed Siraj has stated that his 4-wicket haul against Sri Lanka in the third ODI was his best spell in 50-over cricket for India.

Mohammed Siraj bowled extremely well with the new ball while defending a mammoth target in the third ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, January 15.

He dismissed Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Nuwanidu Fernando and Wanindu Hasaranga inside the first 10 overs. Then, on the 4th ball of the 12th over he ran Chamika Karunaratne out with a brilliant direct hit.

Siraj finished his spell with the career-best figures of 10-1-32-4, unfortunately missing out on a well-deserved 5-wicket haul. In a video shared by the BCCI on Twitter, Siraj said:

“This was my best spell in ODIs because I hadn’t picked up 4 wickets until now. Even if I got 3 wickets here, it would have been good because the way I was releasing the ball, the way I was bowling the outswing deliveries and the wobble seam, it made me very happy.”

On the 4th ball of the 12th over, Mohammed Siraj bowled a full-length delivery to Chamika Karunaratne and the Sri Lanka all-rounder defended it quite well and held on to his pose. Siraj quickly picked up the ball and threw it back at the stumps. Karunaratne was caught off guard and got run out. While talking about the run-out, Siraj said:

“Talking about the run-out, I told something to the batsman. Whenever a batsman comes forward to defend, it frustrates me a lot. So I told him something and after that, he came up with a front foot defence and I just picked up the ball and threw it at the stumps. The run-out was excellent.”

The 28-year-old pacer castled Sri Lanka bowling all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga for 1 with a lovely inswinger in the match. While talking about the dismissal, he said:

“When I started bowling to (Wanindu) Hasaranga, I bowled three outswingers and then I thought I will have to bowl my wobble seam because he was just trying to throw away his bat without any foot movement. I thought that I should bowl a scrambled seam and I got that wicket so I was quite happy.”

India will next take on New Zealand in a 6-match limited-overs series. The New Zealand tour of India 2023 consists of three ODIs and three T20Is. The ODIs will be played on January 18, 21 and 24 in Hyderabad, Raipur and Indore respectively. While, the T20Is will be played on January 27, 29 and February 1 in Ranchi, Lucknow and Ahmedabad respectively.

“I am very happy because it will be my first international match at my home ground. I just want to say to the fans that ‘see you soon in Hyderabad’.”
