Australia National Cricket Team History
- Australia played their first Test match against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1877 and won that game by 45 runs. Charles Bannerman starred with the bat in the game, scoring the first Test century (165) and retired hurt.
- The Ashes rivalry began in 1882 after Fred Spofforth's sensational spell of 7/44 helped Australia defend 84 runs at the Oval. After the game, The Sporting Times printed a mock obituary in which the death of English cricket was proclaimed and the announcement was made that "the body was cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.
- The 1930s saw the emergence of the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, widely regarded as the greatest batsman of all time. He retired after setting several major batting records such as the highest Test score (334 vs England, 1930), most runs (6996), most centuries (29), and a Test batting average of 99.94.
- Apart from playing the first-ever Test, Australia was also involved in the first-ever ODI in 1971, the first-ever T20I in 2005, and the first-ever Day/Night Test in 2015.
