England Test skipper Joe Root admitted that his side was outplayed by Australia in the three Tests of Ashes 2021-22 so far.
On Tuesday, Australia handed England a humiliating defeat by an innings and 14 runs as the hosts were relentless and aggressive with their bowling execution.
Debutant Scott Boland, who is the local player of Melbourne, scripted remarkable figures of six wickets for seven runs. England were bundled up for 68 inside the first session as Australia clinched the series 3-0 to retain the Ashes.
Australia have outplayed us in this Test and in the series so far: Joe Root
Root was the lone warrior left in England’s batting, trying to score runs but his efforts didn’t last for a long as he was dismissed by Boland on 28.
The England captain said that his side was blown away by Australia in Melbourne. Despite losing the big series, Root remained firm to come back in the remaining two matches.
“All you can do is try and front up to it and concentrate of putting in good performances on the field and credit to Australia, they blew us away last night and have outplayed us in this Test and in the series so far,” Root said in the post-match press conference.
“We’ve got a lot of hard work to do to make sure we come back in the last two games,” he added.
The positive Covid tests wasn’t ideal: Joe Root
On Monday, Cricket Australia confirmed that two members of the England Cricket Team’s support staff and two of their family members tested COVID-19 positive after undergoing the Rapid Antigen Test.
Root denied that detection of the cases had to do anything with the team’s performance and said his players were excellent on the field.
“Yesterday with the positive Covid tests wasn’t ideal, but I actually thought the way we went about our cricket on the field was excellent,” Root stated.
Australia will play against England in the fourth Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, starting on January 5.
