Over the last few years, India have been a force to be reckoned with in Test Cricket. Under the leadership of Virat Kohli, India have achieved great success in the longest format of the game. They have been a team to beat at home and also registered famous series wins in difficult conditions in overseas. Consistent performances helped them reach the final of the World Test Championship.

Unfortunately, they lost to New Zealand in the summit clash. However, besides that, there aren’t many occasions that would make fans feel dejected with India’s performances in the longest format of the game. Since 2020, India registered numerous memorable wins against strong teams such as Australia, England, and South Africa to name a few.

A lot of credit for that should be given to the openers, who laid solid platforms for the team to post formidable totals on the board. The Indian openers have, in fact, do the bulk of the scoring for the team in Test Cricket since 2020.

To further shed light on the runs scored by Indian openers in the last few years, here’s a look at 5 Indian openers with the most 50+ scores by Indian openers in Tests since 2020

Rohit Sharma’s second innings in Test Cricket has been exceptional. He made his comeback in Test Cricket against South Africa in 2019. Rohit has been scoring runs consistently since. He was India’s second-highest run-scorer in Tests in 2020. The following year, he scored the second-most number of runs in the world in Test Cricket. In 11 Tests played in 2021, Rohit Sharma amassed 906 runs in 11 Tests at an average of 47.68.

Rohit Sharma was India’s highest run-scorer in the home Test series against England. Later, when India toured England for a Test series, Rohit Sharma yet again scored the most runs for the team. Since 2020 in Test Cricket, Rohit Sharma has 6 half-centuries to his name- the most by any Indian opener.

India’s new vice-captain in the white-ball format, KL Rahul is currently in the form of his life. He has been in blistering touch across formats. KL Rahul recently struck his maiden Test century in South Africa in the first Test of the ongoing series. Earlier, KL Rahul notched a century in England in the five-match Test series.

The injury to Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill helped KL Rahul get another chance to open in Test Cricket. He made full use of the opportunity as he scored the third most number of runs in the series. In 4 Test, he amassed 315 runs at an average of close to 39.38. KL Rahul, as an opener, has 4 half-centuries to his name in Tests since 2020.

Mayank Agarwal’s numbers in Test Cricket have been nothing short of outstanding. In 17 Tests, he has managed to score 1358 runs at an average of 46.8. The rise of Rohit Sharma in Test Cricket has made it difficult for Mayank Agarwal to open regularly for India.

He has continuously been in and out of the side. Both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul were rested in the recent home Test series against New Zealand, allowing Mayank Agarwal to open the innings. He scored 150 and 62 in the first and second innings respectively in the second Test.

Injuries to Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, once again, has helped Mayank Agarwal to open in the ongoing Test series in South Africa. Since 2020, Mayank Agarwal has managed to hit 4 half-centuries as an opener in Test Cricket.

Shubman Gill has played 558 runs in 10 Tests so far in his Test Cricket career. He made his Test debut on the Boxing Day Test against Australia in 2020. Gill played wonderful knocks while opening the innings and played a crucial role in helping India claim their second Border-Gavaskar series win in Australia. In 3 Tests, Gill amassed 259 runs at an average of 51.80, including two half-centuries.

Gill scored a half-century in the first of the two Tests against New Zealand earlier in December. He scored 44 and 47 in the next two innings of the second Test. In his Test cricket career so far, Shubman Gill has been guilty of not converting the starts into big scores. Since 2020, Shubman Gill has managed to hit 4 half-centuries in his Test Cricket career.

Prithvi Shaw made his Test debut back in 2018 against West Indies. Shaw scored an outstanding century in his very first Test and thereby the youngest batsman to make a Test century on debut for India. Shaw was also named the Player of the Series.

So far, he has only managed to play 5 Tests for India and has 339 runs to his name at an average of 42.4. Prithvi Shaw hasn’t received a lot of backing from the selectors in the recent past in Test Cricket. He played his last Test against Australia in Australia in the Border Gavakaskar series 2020-21. Since 2020, Prithvi Shaw has only managed to hit 1 half-century.
