Reginald Erskine Foster still holds the record for the highest score on Test debut which he scored against the Mighty Australian team in 1903 at the SCG. He scored a magnificent 287 batting at number four for the England team and hit 37 fours in the process. His efforts led to an easy win for England by 5 wickets and he was also the only player in history to have captained both his national football team and cricket team. He played just 8 Tests scoring 602 runs and he passed away at the early age of 36 due to diabetes.

The former West Indian batsman Lawrence Rowe achieved a very rare feat of scoring a double century on the Test debut and he followed it up with another century in the second innings. Lawrence’s 214 run-knock against New Zealand comprised 19 fours and one six and he was one of the most elegant batsmen at the time. He played 30 Tests for West Indies scoring 2047 runs at an average of 43.55 and he has a triple century in Tests too.

Brendon Kuruppu broke the shackles in Test cricket in 1987 to become the only wicket-keeper until now to score a double century on debut and he is also the only Sri Lankan batsman to do so. Opening the batting, Kuruppu scored a fluent unbeaten 201 against New Zealand at Colombo and he managed to play just three more Tests after that. He is currently serving as the Maldives national cricket team coach.

The former New Zealand top-order batsman Mathew Sinclair scored a brilliant double century on his debut Test which set the tone for the host’s win against West Indies. Sinclairs’ 214 off 447 balls comprised of 22 fours and it turned out to be his highest Test score. Sinclair played 33 Tests and scored 1635 runs at an average of 32.05 and he could never settle into the middle order despite scoring heavily in domestic cricket.

Jacques Rudolph:

The former South African left-hander Jacques Rudolph scored a fine double century in the 2003 away series against Bangladesh on his Test debut and he never looked like getting out. His unbeaten 222 comprised 29 fours and two sixes and it was a massive 439 run partnership between him and Boeta Dippennaar in the match. Rudolph played 48 Tests for South Africa scoring 2622 runs at an average of 35.43.

This was one of the historic wins for the West Indies Test side as they pulled out a win from an impossible situation in the first Test this year. Mayers led the way with an impressive double century and scored a 210 run knock in 310 balls with 20 fours and seven sixes in his innings. Mayers’ innings will go down as one of the best by a West Indian batsman in history.

The New Zealand left-hander batsman Devon Conway broke another record of scoring a massive double century on his Test debut and he was unfortunate to be run out on 200. Conway’s double century on Test debut was the second one this year and his international start has been excellent so far. It was so special to score a double century in Tests at the lords in England and will get his name on the honours board.
