Captaincy can always take a cricketer to his prime form and for someone who doesn’t like taking responsibility, it might just be the other way round with a dip in form. There has always been a fact that Leaders are born and it has always been true in cricket with the character being an important part of captaincy.

Some players use the opportunity to make inroads in the best possible way with their captaincy and they always have to make sure that they keep contributing with the bat so that they release a little bit of weight from them. Here is the list of players with the most runs as a test captain among active cricketers.

The New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson holds the fourth position in the list of most runs as a test captain among active cricketers with 3193 runs. The 30-year-old has led his team to victory in the ICC World Test Championship finals against India and he was the top scorer for the Kiwis in the tournament.

Williamson is one of the best batsmen in the modern era scoring almost 7230 runs in 85 Tests at an average of 54 with 24 centuries and 33 half-centuries in his test career. He is expected to do wonders for New Zealand in the upcoming ICC Tournaments with the T20 Worldcup coming up in few months.

Steve Smith is one of the best test batsmen of the generation and he held the number one position in ICC test rankings for a long time. Steve Smith holds the third position in the list of most runs as a test captain among active cricketers with 3659 runs for Australia.

Smith has an unusual technique that most batsmen don’t find effective, but the right-hander averages more than 61 in test cricket. He is very strong on the leg side and his trigger movement has enabled him to keep scoring on the on-side. Smith would score a lot more runs as a captain if he wasn’t sacked in the ball-tampering scandal in 2018.

Joe Root:

The current England test skipper Joe Root is one of the finest batsmen to have played from his nation and he has already broken a lot of records. Root was phenomenal in the ICC World Test Championship and almost took his team to the finals by scoring two double centuries this year against Sri Lanka and India.

Root holds the second position in the list of most runs as a test captain among the active cricketers with 4120 runs so far. The right-hander has already played 105 tests scoring 8714 runs at an average of 48.7 and he will continue to be the most important player in the test team for England with his extraordinary batting skills.

Virat Kohli:

Virat Kohli is by far the most successful test captain for India already and he still has a long way to go in his international test career which speaks volumes of the way he has been captaining. Kohli is one of the best batsmen in the modern era with an average of more than 50 in all the formats.

Kohli led India to the World Test Championship finals but couldn’t take the trophy home which has been the only drawback from the Indian skipper so far. Kohli holds the record for the most runs by a Test captain among active cricketers with 5449 runs and the records will keep moving up the ladder for India’s greatest match-winner.
