The Bengal Cricket Team represents the state of Bengal in India's domestic circuit. The team is administered by the Cricket Association of Bengal and plays its home games at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Talking about Bengal cricket team's history, the team was founded in the year 1889. At that time, no native Bengali was a part of the Bengal team. The team was led by British Army officer Cleveland Greenway. Bengal played their debut first-class game in the year 1935 when they faced the touring Australian sides at the Eden Gardens.
The Cricket Association of Bengal was founded in 1928. While the Ranji Trophy was played for the first time in 1934-35 season, Bengal could not participate in it. The Bengal cricket team achieved first-class status in 1935.
In 1936, Bengal played the Ranji Trophy for the first time and qualified for the semifinal where they lost to Madras. In 1936–37 season, Bengal were runners-up to Nawanagar. Two years later, in 1938–39, Bengal won the Ranji for the first time with a win over Southern Punjab in the final.
Bengal won their second Ranji Trophy in 1989–90 with a win over Delhi in the final. They have not won the competition since then. Apart from winning the Ranji Trophy twice, Bengal have finished runners-up 13 times. Only Mumbai have played more finals than Bengal in India's premier first-class competition.
Bengal have also won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy once so far. They won the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy in 2011 before winning the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2012.
