Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra was impressed with Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in the first ODI against West Indies.
On Sunday, Rohit led India in what was their 1000th One-Day International match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This was Rohit’s first match as full-time captain of India’s white-ball skipper since his appointment ahead of the South Africa tour.
India beat West Indies by six wickets in first ODI
Rohit won the toss and asked West Indies to bat first, Washington Sundar was introduced in the Powerplay overs. The Tamil Nadu spinner got the wickets of Brandon King and Darren Bravo before the pair could build a big partnership.

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who managed to pick just two wickets in three ODI matches against South Africa, tore the West Indies batting order with 4/49.
The visitors’ innings folded up at 176 after Jason Holder’s resistance later in the innings, scoring 57 from 71 balls. Rohit led the chase with 51-ball 60 as India won by six wickets with 22 overs to spare.
Rohit Sharma was a good captain yesterday: Aakash Chopra
Chopra said that Rohit is a good reader of the game and will always remain a good captain in the coming years.
“It was just the first match for Rohit Sharma as full-time captain and we saw what was expected of him. A lot of people are asking the question about how different his captaincy was. Rohit Sharma was a good captain yesterday, is a good captain today and will remain a good captain tomorrow as well,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
“Whether he is a temporary or permanent captain, the fact is that he reads the game beautifully and there is no doubt about that. He did the same thing, the way he used the bowlers, the way he introduced them, whether it was Washington Sundar or utilizing Yuzi Chahal’s overs.”
“He [Rohit] kept on putting a stranglehold on the West Indies batters, he was brilliant. Winning the toss is another important moment, it is starting to become a deciding factor in white-ball cricket. His friendship with the toss is good, it might turn out to be very useful in ICC events,” he added.
India will play the second ODI match against West Indies on February 9 at the same venue.
