Indian premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah may not play in the all-important Asia Cup 2022, which is set to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the end of this month.
Bumrah sustained a back injury which will force him out of action for a few weeks, as per a report in the Times of India. The squad for the tournament is slated to be announced on August 8, Monday.
“Jasprit Bumrah has a back injury and will not play in the Asia Cup. He is our main bowler and we would like him to be back in action before the T20 World Cup. We can’t risk him in the Asia Cup as the injury could aggravate,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
Bumrah was rested for the white-ball tour of West Indies alongside Virat Kohli. He last played in the ODI series against England where he was fully fit. He was also rested for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour.
T20 World Cup still in sight for Jasprit Bumrah
Fortunately for Bumrah, he has more than enough time to recover for the T20 World Cup. The pacer will head over to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for his rehabilitation process.
He could be in contention to return for the home series against Australia and South Africa in September and October, just a couple of weeks away from the start of the T20 World Cup in Australia.
The 28-year-old’s injury is a huge blow for the Indian team as they would have liked to see him bowl alongside Bhuvneshwar Kumar and co. and prepare for the ICC tournament.
