Asia Cup 2022: Might Even See Virat Kohli Opening With Rohit Sharma As KL Rahul Is Not Fit – Parthiv Patel

Former India National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel believes that the star batter Virat Kohli might open the innings for the India National Cricket Team alongside captain Rohit Sharma in the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup.

The Asia Cup 2022, which is the 15th edition of the tournament, is scheduled to be played from August 27 to September 11. The entire tournament is set to be held in United Arab Emirates (UAE). The tournament was originally set to be played in Sri Lanka but was shifted to United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to economic and political crises in the country.

Meanwhile, modern-day batting great Virat Kohli, who has smashed 70 international centuries, is going through a lengthy lean patch. Kohli last scored a ton in 2019 and since then he has failed to reach the three-figure mark.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, he scored 341 runs at an average of 22.73 and a strike rate of 115.98, including two half-centuries.

Also, in the recent all-format tour of England, the 33-year-old had an awful run. He registered scores of 11 & 20 in the Edgbaston Test, 1 and 11 in two T20Is, and 16 and 17 in two ODIs. Currently, Kohli is on a break as he has been rested for the entire West Indies tour as well as the Zimbabwe tour.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Parthiv Patel talked about Team India and said that they must find the right combination ahead of the Asia Cup. He added that Kohli has been highly successful as an opener for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and there is a possibility that he might open for India in the Asia Cup.

“There is no doubt about Virat Kohli’s abilities. It is just about the form and about which position you want him to play. That is why Asia Cup becomes very crucial, not only for him but for India’s point of view also, whether they get the right combination or not. I will keep saying about the combination because that would be the key,” said Parthiv on Cricbuzz.

“You might even see Virat Kohli opening in the Asia Cup as KL Rahul is not fit. They said he will be available from Asia Cup and India have tried so many other openers. Virat Kohli has been comfortable opening with RCB. He has got all those big seasons, where he came as an opener,” he added.

Notably, KL Rahul had suffered a severe groin injury ahead of the five-match T20I series against South Africa also he was recently tested positive for Covid-19. The groin injury and Covid-19 ruled him out of the series against South Africa, Ireland tour, all-format tour of England, and the West Indies tour.
