Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Sami said that Babar Azam-led Pakistan will win the Asia Cup title in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The two-times continental champions will start their Asia Cup 2022 campaign with the high-octane clash against Rohit Sharma & co on Sunday in Dubai.
Pakistan are going to win Asia Cup: Mohammad Sami
Pakistan haven’t played enough white-ball cricket in the last few months, their latest 3-0 win against the Netherlands was in the 50-over format. Pakistan played its last T20I game against Australia earlier in April.
Sami, who played 87 ODIs and 13 T20Is for Pakistan national team, backed Pakistan to win their third Asia Cup title.
“Pakistan are going to win because their confidence is so high,” Sami was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.
Pakistan will be playing without the services of left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi, who had bagged 47 scalps in 40 games. Shaheen suffered a knee injury during the Test series against Sri Lanka in July and will at least take 4-6 weeks to recover to full fitness.
Sami said Pakistan will miss the lanky pacer but they have the confidence in their other core bowlers to deliver at their best.
“Pakistan will miss Shaheen, but they’re on a winning spree so they have confidence on their side. Also, the conditions will favor Babar and co,” Sami added.
Afghanistan has best spin attack in this tournament: Mohammad Sami
Afghanistan started the Asia Cup 2022 curtain raiser with the demolishing of hosts Sri Lanka in a eight-wicket win on Saturday in Dubai.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman and captain Mohammad Nabi chipped in with two wickets to complement Fazalhaq Farooqi, who picked 3/11 from 3.4 overs to bowl Sri Lanka out for 105 in 19.4 overs.
“India’s spin attack is pretty good. They have a left-arm spinner, an off-spinner, and a wrist spinner too. Afghanistan obviously has Rashid Khan, which makes them the team with the best spin attack in the UAE conditions,” Sami mentioned.
India and Pakistan will play at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday evening.
