Asia Cup 2022: Sri Lanka Ready To Host The Marquee Tournament – Reports

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has asserted that it is ready to host the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 tournament, which will be played from August 27 to September 11, as per reports.

There was uncertainty over Sri Lanka hosting the Asia Cup 2022 from August 27 because of the economic and political crisis in the country. However, an IANS report states that the government also wants the tournament to be held in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the Asian Cricket Council Asia Cup is a men’s One Day International and T20 International cricket tournament for Asian teams and it was established in 1983. The first edition of the Asia Cup was played in 1984 in the United Arab Emirates and India emerged as champions.

The latest edition of the tournament was also held in the United Arab Emirates and India won its 7th title. Also, Sri Lanka, the second most successful team, have won 5 titles and Pakistan have won 2 titles.

In the Annual general meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in March, it was announced that the Asia Cup 2022 will be played from August 27 to September 11.

Meanwhile, SLC secretary Mohan de Silva has said that the board president Shammi Silva has already informed the ACC president Jay Shah about the preparations of the board to host the event.

“We will leave it to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to make the announcement but our board president Shammi Silva has informed Jay Shah, the president of ACC, about our preparedness to hold the event,” Mohan de Silva, secretary of the SLC, was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Asia Cup 2022 had been postponed twice, first in 2020 due to Covid-19 and then in 2021. The qualifiers for the Asia Cup, which will be a 20-over tournament, are expected to begin on August 20, 2022.

Also, six teams will battle for the championship, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka, and one qualifier.
