The Asia Cup 2022 will be the 15th edition of the regional tournament since it was first conducted in 1984 in Sharjah. The continental tournament is scheduled to be played in the T20 format between August 27 and September 11.
Sri Lanka was named the hosts for the Asia Cup 2022, which was initially supposed to be hosted in 2020 but the biennial tournament was deferred due to the rising COVID-19 cases in the country.
The Asia Cup will happen and there is no threat to the tournament: Sanath Jayasuriya
With the recent developments in the island nation, where the protests are making the headlines at a time when the country is hit with the worst economic crisis and political turmoil, question marks loom over Sri Lanka’s chances to host the event.
Sri Lanka’s PM Ranil Wickremesinghe and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said they are ready to quit their respective positions after protesters stormed the president’s official residence and set the prime minister’s house on fire.
However, former Sri Lanka player Sanath Jayasuriya, who is the leading run-scorer in the Asia Cup – 1220 runs at 53.04, is pretty confident about the continental tournament going ahead in his country despite the tensions among citizens.
“I am very confident that the Asia Cup will happen and there is no threat to the tournament. In Sri Lanka, everyone loves cricket and the cricketers from every nation. The Sri Lankan public has absolutely nothing against any cricketer. There will be all necessary support to hold the tournament peacefully,” Jayasuriya was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
ACC keeps Bangladesh as stand-by host nation for Asia Cup 2022
The Indian women’s team played six white-ball games against Sri Lanka women’s team and Australia’s men’s side recently returned from their month-long tour to Sri Lanka with none of the matches interrupted by any protesters.
A report from The Indian Express suggests that the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has considered Bangladesh as a backup country to host the Asia Cup 2022. Even though Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) expressed its willingness to hold the biennial event, the final decision will be taken by the governing council body later this month.
“The ACC is monitoring the situation and will make a decision in its meeting later this month, keeping all factors in mind,” a source told Sportstar.
The ACC is yet to announce the schedule and groups for the Asia Cup 2022 but it is believed that India and Pakistan will play in the same group and their contest will be staged on August 28.
