Asia Cup 2022: VVS Laxman Named Interim Head Coach Of Team India
National Cricket Academy (NCA) head coach, VVS Laxman, was announced as the interim head coach of the Indian team for the upcoming Asia Cup tournament that will begin on August 27, Saturday, in the UAE.
Regular head coach, Rahul Dravid, tested positive for covid-19 ahead of the team’s departure and was unable to travel. He is under the watchful eyes of the medical staff.
Therefore, Laxman, who has previously coached the Men in Blue, will travel with the team to the UAE.
“Mr Laxman, who travelled with the Indian team that played the ODI series in Zimbabwe will oversee the team’s preparation in the absence of Mr Rahul Dravid, who tested positive for COVID-19 before the team’s departure to the UAE,” a statement from the BCCI read.
Dravid is expected to return to the team after he returns a negative result in his covid-19 test.
“Mr Dravid will join the team once he tests negative and is cleared by the BCCI Medical Team. Mr Laxman has linked up with the squad in Dubai along with vice-captain Mr KL Rahul, Mr Deepak Hooda and Mr Avesh Khan, who travelled from Harare,” the statement further mentioned.
Meanwhile, the Indian team will play its first match on August 28, Sunday, against arch-rivals, Pakistan. India is without Jasprit Bumrah while Pakistan is missing the services of Shaheen Afridi.
