Inzamam-ul-Haq reacted to Wasim Akram’s relatively strong criticism of Mohammad Rizwan following his knock against Hong Kong. Akram had been the former captain of Pakistan.

Pakistan defeated an inexperienced Hong Kong team by 155 runs in their final group match of the Asia Cup to secure a spot in the Super 4 round. The men in green bowled Hong Kong out for just 38 after posting a good score of 193/2 in 20 overs, with spin-twins Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz taking a combined seven wickets.

Mohammad Rizwan hit 78 runs off 57 balls to remain unbeaten, and Fakhar Zaman added a half-century with a score of 51. Khushil Shah gave Pakistan’s innings the late bloom it needed to reach a high score in Sharjah (35* off 15 balls).

Although Rizwan won the game’s player of the match award, Wasim Akram, a former Pakistani pacer and legendary bowler, expressed his utter displeasure with the manner the wicketkeeper-batter handled his Hong Kong innings. Because Pakistan had depth in its batting, as per Akram, Rizwan should have gone for huge smashes so that other players may have had a chance to play.

They should’ve planned their batting: Inzamam-ul-Haq

After the video of Akram’s remarks was played, Inzamam-ul-Haq, a former captain of Pakistan, responded to them on Geo Super, the country’s news channel. Rizwan handing away his wicket was something Inzamam-ul-Haq disagreed with, but he claimed the wicketkeeper-batter “could have taken chances.”

“I was just about to say the same thing, although I disagree with Wasim Bhai that he needs to leave. We were expressing how lovely it would have been if Asif had been given the chance to bat. Wasim Bhai probably intended for the top three to try to play 12–13 overs. They lasted until those overs against Hong Kong, but Rizwan could have taken some chances,” Inzamam-ul-Haq added.

“They should have planned their batting, I say. The match’s tenth over, in which we managed only 64 runs, was where we ran into trouble. It was not a significant score versus a team like Hong Kong ” Inzamam-ul-Haq added.

Pakistan will return to action later on Sunday when they face archrival India in their first Super 4 match.
