Former India National Cricket Team batter Sanjay Manjrekar, while talking about India’s attacking approach in T20Is, said that the high-risk approach, on odd occasions, results in the fall of wickets “at worst possible time”.

India lost their first Super 4 stage game of the Asia Cup 2022 against Pakistan by 5 wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Batting first, openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul provided India with a flying start, but the fall of wickets at regular intervals meant India were able to post 181 runs on the board. Pakistan completed the run-chase in the final over to secure a win over the Men In Blue in the multi-nation tournament.

Speaking on SPORTS18’s daily sports news show ‘SPORTS OVER THE TOP’, Sanjay Manjrekar talked about India’s batting performance against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 round. He said:

“I don’t think the tail is too long because when you look at the batting ability of the team that played in the last game on paper, for example, if you line them down, you had somebody like a Deepak Hooda at 7. So that’s plenty of batting. So, I don’t think that was an issue. It was one of those things when you have this high-risk approach on the odd occasion, what will happen is that wickets will fall at the worst possible time.”

They could have gotten 210-220 if there was more contribution from the lower half – Sanjay Manjrekar

Manjrekar further said that the failure of the lower-order batting unit resulted in India not being able to post a score in the excess of 200 against arch-rivals in the high-voltage game.

“Suryakumar Yadav just got himself out, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul. So, it’s one of those things. But India still ended up getting 180. I thought they could have gotten 210-220 if there was more contribution from the lower half. Interestingly, in the first 10 overs, India got 93 and in the next 10, they got 88. But it’s one of the occupational hazards of this approach. But not because the tail is too long,” he added.
