India skipper Rohit Sharma achieved a major feat on Tuesday against Sri Lanka as he became the first batter from the country to complete 1,000 runs in Asia Cup history. Rohit got to the milestone during India’s Super 4 match against Sri Lanka in Asia Cup 2022 in Dubai.
The 35-year-old batting dynamo went past the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who had amassed 971 runs in 23 matches in the Asia Cup. Tendulkar, however, got all his runs in the ODI format of the continental tournament.
Rohit Sharma is currently in third place on the all-time list
Rohit is now ranked third on the all-time list behind Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara. Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli complete the top 5 as India and Sri Lanka players dominate the batting charts in Asia Cup history.
Rohit Sharma hit an exhilarating 41-ball 72 to lead India’s counter-attack against an inspired Sri Lanka bowling attack. India were reduced to 13 for 2 after they lost opener KL Rahul for 6 and former captain Virat Kohli for 0 in the powerplay.
Rohit Sharma leads India’s charge; plays the captain’s knock
Rohit hit 2 sixes and a boundary in Hasaranga’s 3rd over as he helped shift the momentum towards India after Sri Lanka dominated the opening passages of the game after their captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and opted to field in Dubai.
The Indian captain displayed a fearless attitude despite the Men in Blue losing early wickets and took well-calculated risks to lead the charge in a 97-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav.
Rohit fell to medium pacer Chamika Karunaratne in the 13th over but he got the job done before getting out.
