The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed former India spinner Sridharan Sriram as Bangladesh team head coach for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 and the T20 World Cup 2022.

The Asia Cup 2022 will begin on August 27 in UAE and the T20 World Cup will be played in Australia in October-November. Bangladesh has been placed in Group B in Asia Cup 2022 along with Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

Sridharan Sriram played eight ODIs for India between 2000 and 2004 and was until recently the spin coach for the Australian team for a long time. He became the spin consultant of Kangaroos in 2016 when Darren Lehmann was the head coach of the Australian team.

“Yes, we have chosen Sriram up until the World Cup. As we are moving forward with a fresh mindset, the new coach will be seen from the Asia Cup onwards. And since the T20 World Cup is our main target, he (a new coach) will not get time to adapt if he is not recruited from the Asia Cup. Many may say that there is not much left for the Asia Cup. However, as I said, our main focus is the T20 World Cup,” the Daily Star newspaper quoted a BCB official saying.

Currently, Sridharan Sriram is the spin coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Therefore, he stepped down from his role as the spin consultant of the Australian team to focus on his job as RCB spin coach.

Russell Domingo To Remain Bangladesh Test Team Head Coach

The BCB official clarified that Russell Domingo will continue to coach the Bangladesh Test side.

He said: “Domingo would continue his role in guiding the Test team, for now, as we have a Test match against India in November.”

Bangladesh would be eager to do well in the Asia Cup which will be played in the T20 format, especially after losing the T20I series to Zimbabwe recently.
