A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source while speaking to TOI revealed the real reason behind the inclusion of Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav in India’s Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 against Australia National Cricket Team at home, which will commence in February.

On Friday, January 13, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the first two Tests against Australia and Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav received call-ups.

A BCCI source has stated that the selection committee wanted attacking options in the middle-order for Tests against Australia in the absence of Rishabh Pant, who is out of action for an indefinite period after his horrific car accident, and Suryakumar and Kishan were the two good options available.

It is being told that the selection committee and team management are keen to play Kishan in the playing XI as a like-for-like replacement for the star wicketkeeper-batter Pant.

“Playing a wicketkeeper in place of Pant is not the major problem. The team needs someone who can take the game away at No. 5 like Pant did. That’s why Ishan has been picked. Suryakumar is also seen as such an option. India are expected to play on turners. So, the team will be looking at someone who can score quickly,” a BCCI source told TOI.

Pant’s understudy KS Bharat has been travelling with the Indian squad for a long period of time, but he is yet to make his Test debut.

A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source has said that the selection committee and team management don’t look at Bharat as a batter who can play in the top six and hence they want Kishan to be in the XI.

“Bharat is not seen as someone who can bat in the top six. If Bharat is played then the team will be forced to sacrifice a bowler. If Ishan is played, then he can bat in the top 6. But the concern is that Ishan has not been keeping wickets in First-Class matches. He didn’t keep wickets in the last game he played for Jharkhand,” the source told TOI.
