Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, reckons KL Rahul should be selected as the keeper-batter for the WTC final between India and Australia at The Oval just because of his batting talent.

On the fifth day of the fourth Test between India and Australia in Ahmedabad, New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka in a last-ball thriller in Christchurch. The outcome had a far-reaching influence that eliminated Sri Lanka from contention and guaranteed India a place in the World Test Championship final, regardless of the outcome in Ahmedabad.

Rohit Sharma and the company will be guaranteed a spot in Monday’s ICC World Test Championship final thanks to Kane Williamson’s game-winning performance against Sri Lanka in the first Test. Team India, who finished second in the first ICC World Test Championship, secured a spot in the championship match as Sri Lanka failed to defeat the Black Caps in the first test of the two-game series.

The Sri Lankan team led by Dimuth Karunaratne had a slim chance of reaching the ICC World Test Championship championship match. To clinch the final position in the Test Championship final, the visitors in New Zealand needed to hand the local team a 2-0 series loss. At the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, the rain gods made their presence known, but Kane Williamson-led New Zealand prevailed against Sri Lanka in a nail-biting last over. The Kiwis’ victory has prevented Sri Lanka’s last-minute attempt to reach the championship match.

“You can see KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper”- Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, feels KL Rahul should be regarded as a keeper-batter for the WTC final only on the basis of his batting capabilities.

“You can see KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper. If he bats at No.5 or 6 in at the Oval (in the WTC final) then our batting will be stronger. Because he batted really well in England last year. He scored a century at the Lord’s. Keep KL Rahul in mind when you pick your XI for the WTC final,” Sunil Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

Rahul was removed from his vice-captaincy and withdrawn from the lineup after the first two Tests of the Australia series. In his last ten Test innings, he failed to score a single 30-run innings.
