The Rohit Sharma-led team are in a comfortable position with young batter Shubman Gill starting his first Test in home conditions on Saturday, March 11.

India started the first session on Day 3 with a score of 36 for no loss. The hosts lost Rohit Sharma’s wicket to the bowling of Matthew Kuhnemann inside the first hour. Rohit looked comfortable against Australian bowlers before being dismissed for 35 runs. He walked away in frustration after being caught at short cover.

Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara steered the innings after the fall of an early wicket in the morning session. The duo added a 113-run partnership for the second wicket before Pujara was dismissed for 42 runs off the bowling of Todd Murphy just before tea. Pujara became the fourth Indian batter to score 2000 or more Test runs against Australia after Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and Rahul Dravid.

During India’s first innings, a funny incident occurred between Ravindra Jadeja and Steve Smith. Jadeja played a defensive shot with soft hands, and the ball went behind the wicketkeeper. Jadeja and Kohli ran for two runs, but the left-handed batter collided with Smith after completing the second run.

The visitors made the most of batting first on the flat pitch in Ahmedabad. The Steve Smith-led team batted six sessions and posted a mammoth total of 480 runs on the board. Usman Khawaja scored 180 runs, and Cameron Green smashed 114. Ravichandran Ashwin shone with six wickets, while other bowlers looked off-colour.

The 36-year-old picked up his 32nd five-wicket haul in red-ball cricket. Ashwin bowled well and finished with figures of 47.2-15-91-6 in tough conditions where the bowlers didn’t get help from the surface. Ashwin bowled with less than a 2 economy rate on a flat pitch and dismissed Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, and Todd Murphy.
