The new men’s head coach of Australia has yet to be announced, but limited-overs captain Aaron Finch acknowledges the winning candidate may have to supervise a transitional phase for the white-ball teams, with the 2023 ODI World Cup drawing near as a normal endpoint for some senior players.

Following the messy departure of the previous coach Justin Langer, Cricket Australia has quietly searched for a new senior coach with the help of a recruitment firm over the last month.

Interim coach Andrew McDonald is the popular pick to hold the position full-time, but the form of the head coach framework may well ascertain who action will help on the position or roles if CA decides to divide the head coaching positions around on red and white-ball lines.

Aaron Finch mentioned that he aims to compete in the ODI World Cup:

“Should he get there,” Finch said, the ODI World Cup in India next year will be the pinnacle of his international career. By the end of the competition, more than half of Australia’s first-choice team will be over 30 years old.

Finch claimed that he met with the recruitment agency in charge of the coaching search, but that he had been not asked who he thinks should be the coach.

“That was rather on my ideas on where the squad is right now and in which we see the team going in the future, particularly over the next 18 months leading up to the 50-over World Cup,” Finch said.

“It’s an intriguing change, in my opinion. It’ll be over the next two years, while we’ve got a very senior side, or a very senior squad, at the present when everybody is available, so there’ll be a lot of volatility over the next two years. It will be critical to have someone in place who can handle the player transfer.”

With David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Kane Richardson all unavailable, Finch is about to captain a young ODI and T20I squad to Pakistan.
During the tour of Pakistan, Finch will represent Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL as a substitute for Alex Hales.
