With six wickets remaining, Pakistan leveled the three-match series against a weakened Australia by completing its greatest ever successful run-chase in an ODI, chasing down the 349-run goal. Pakistan reached 349-4 with an over to spare because of captain Babar Azam and Imam-ul-centuries.
Pakistan ended a 10-match losing streak against Australia, who was missing numerous key players and had only 13 fit players to choose from after the white-ball squad in Lahore was hit by Covid-19.
Pakistan captain Babar also achieved an astounding achievement during the game at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, scoring 114 runs off just 83 deliveries. This was Babar’s 15th ODI century, making him the fastest player in the format to attain the milestone (83 innings).
Hashim Amla, the former right-handed batsman from South Africa, had reached his 15th century in his 86th innings when the Pakistan skipper achieved the record
Here’s the list of top-5 fastest players to reach 15 ODI centuries:
- Babar Azam (Pakistan) – 83 innings
- Hashim Amla (South Africa) – 86 innings
- Virat Kohli (India) – 106 innings
- David Warner (Australia) – 108 innings
- Shikhar Dhawan (India) – 108 innings
Babar Azam becomes the fastest player to 15 ODI centuries:
Pakistan chased down a target of 349 in Lahore, their best successful chase in one-day international cricket. In 2014, the previous high was 327 versus Bangladesh. Only once before has Pakistan scored more runs in an ODI chase – 361 for 7 against England in 2019 while chasing 374 runs.
Babar was chastised for his sluggish strike rate in Pakistan’s previous game against Australia (in which they lost by 88 runs). In the second game, though, the skipper took command against the spinners and inexperienced fast bowlers, scoring a century off just 71 balls.
Babar Azam has the joint-second most hundreds in one-day international cricket for Pakistan. With 20 tonnes, Saeed Anwar tops the list, while Mohammad Yousuf also has 15 ODI hundreds. In ODI chases, Babar has five hundred, second only to Anwar’s 10 for Pakistan.
