Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon said that the team has worked hard and is reaping its rewards in the longest format of the game. Currently, the Aussies are the highest-ranked team in Tests and also lead the WTC points table for the 2021-23 cycle.

Under the new skipper Pat Cummins, Australia won the Ashes by a 4-0 margin. They also visited Pakistan for the historic 3-match Test series and came out on top with a 1-0 victory. The next goal for the Aussies is to reach the WTC final and bag the Test mace.

I think we deserve it [to be the best]. I know that sounds quite arrogant, but we’ve done a lot of hard work as a team and gone through some ups and downs, but I think we deserve some late reward in all our journeys.”

You have more bad days than good days in Test cricket, so we’ve been at the absolute bottom and, hopefully, we’re on our way up to the pinnacle. The Test Championship is a big goal for me. I think if we keep playing a positive brand of cricket then hopefully we’ll be in that final and give ourselves the best chance to win it,” Lyon told in an interview with Sydney Morning Herald.

Lyon said that he still has the fire burning inside and wants to keep improving. He has not thought about retirement anytime soon and has set personal milestones that he is keen to breach.

There’s no end in sight for me – I’m hungrier than ever, I’ve got some big goals I want to tick off personally and as a team. So if I do those goals personally, we’ll pick off the team goals. No end in sight for me,” he mentioned.
