Fazalhaq Farooqi, a left-arm fast bowler from Afghanistan, has had his contract with the Sydney Thunder terminated after a “behaviour” incident prompted an inquiry by Cricket Australia’s Integrity Unit. Following an incident on December 15, according to The Thunder, the team got a complaint regarding Farooqi’s behaviour and forwarded it to CA for further inquiry.

The Thunder have made the decision to sever their relationship with Farooqi in light of that inquiry, as well as a later hearing and decision by a CA Code of Conduct commissioner.

Behaviours Displayed By Fazalhaq Farooqi Sit Outside Our Values: Lee Germon

Before the event, Farooqi had already played one game for the Thunder, recording 2-20 and batting a first-ball duck.

Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon said: “The behaviours displayed by Fazalhaq Farooqi sit outside our values and it was determined that his contract be terminated. Our focus now is providing the necessary support to those affected by this incident.”

After the incident, Farooqi participated in three more games for the Thunder until it was revealed today that his contract will be terminated.

The Thunder made international news last Friday, the day following the incident, when the Adelaide Strikers bowled them out for 15 runs, with Farooqi making one contribution and being the last hitter standing when the innings concluded in the sixth over. Prior to this, he had made 3-20 with the ball.

Then, in a rematch with the Strikers and against the Melbourne Renegades, Farooqi failed to pick up a wicket. The Afghan was signed by the Thunder after making an impression with his T20 World Cup exploits in Australia. He was brought in to fill in for the Thunder’s first draught selection David Willey, who withdrew from the competition in the middle of November, and was given a nine-game contract.

The Thunder stated that they had not made a choice on a substitute player and that they still had games against the Brisbane Heat (twice), Hobart, Perth, and Sydney Sixers coming up in which they had anticipated Farooqi to be available.

The most recent T20 international appearance by the 22-year-old for his nation came in last month’s T20 World Cup match between Afghanistan and Australia at Adelaide Oval.

Fazalhaq Farooqi’s performance in the match drew the attention of Thunder list management as he claimed the wickets of Matthew Wade and Cameron Green while only giving up 29 runs.

The left-armer, who distinguishes himself in death bowling with a yorker, is also on the Sunrisers Hyderabad team for the IPL. Farooqi has also committed to playing for the MI Emirates squad in the UAE’s ILT20 league, which will begin in January.
