The IND vs ENG 4th Test match will be played in Ranchi. The Test match starts from February 23 with India leading the series 2-1. England won the first Test by 28 runs.

India came back in the second Test and won the Test match by 106 runs. Then they won the third by 434 runs. India are placed second and England eighth on the WTC 2023-35 table after the third Test in Rajkot.

Team Analysis

Heading into the fourth Test in Ranchi, Jasprit Bumrah will be rested as per reports. He will return in the fifth Test in Dharamsala. KL Rahul is yet again ruled out from the fourth Test as he is yet to recover from his quadriceps injury that forced him to miss the games in Visakhapatnam and Rajkot as well.

Mukesh Kumar who was released ahead of the third Test will rejoin the squad for the fourth Test and will be the second pacer alongside Mohammed Siraj. Mukesh replacing Bumrah looks like the only possible in the XI. The batting lineup almost picked themselves after their performance in the third Test.

England will have some rethinking to do in all departments. Their bowlers were taken apart by the Indian batters in the third Test. There are reports of Ben Stokes willing to bowl in the final two Test matches. That is likely to ease up the pressure from James Anderson and Mark Wood.

The fourth Test match is in Ranchi which should prompt the return of Shoaib Bashir who was rested in the third Test. Jack Leach is ruled out of the Test series leaving the England spin attack prerrty inexperienced.

The likes of Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley, and Bashir will have a lot of bowling to do in the fourth Test with Joe Root as the fourth spinner. There are reports of Jonny Bairstow likely to be dropped as well.

Key Factors

Pitch Conditions

The pitch conditions in Ranchi for the fourth Test will be a spin-friendly one. The Ranchi track is an out-and-out turning track assisting the spinners. Historically it has a reputation for being a spin-friendly one and it remains the same across the different formats of the game. So far only two Test matches have been played at the venue.

Form and fitness

There are fitness concerns on both teams. KL Rahul is ruled out of the fourth Test as well after not recovering fully from his quadriceps injury that kept him out of the second and third Test matches. Jaspeit Bumrah is likely to be rested from the fourth Test keeping his workload in mind.

For England, Jack Leach is out with a knee injury. Skipper Ben Stokes also operated on his knee after the World Cup. However, seeing the depleted conditions of the spin attack he has thought about resuming bowling in the final two Test matches.

Tactical Acumen

Both Ben Stokes and Rohit Sharma are very experienced international captains. The tactical acumen of Stokes was on show in the first Test when he backed his inexperienced spinners to deliver and they answered his call. In patches, Stokes’s brilliant tactical acumen was on show in the last two Test matches as well.

Speaking about Rohit Sharma his use of Kuldeep Yadav on day 3 of the third especially after Ben Duckett took a liking to him on day two was a masterstroke. His decision to include Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel also worked wonders as both performed significantly toward India’s win in Rajkot.
