The team set multiple records, thrashing New Zealand in the Final of the 2026 T20 World Cup

Suryakumar Yadav-led team made history by winning the title for the third time in the history of the T20 World Cup. The Indian cricket team was the first team to win the trophy in back-to-back editions. They are the only team in history to defend the title successfully, and the only team to win it on home soil.

It was a one-sided match on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Batting first, the Men in Blue registered a massive total of 255 runs in exchange for only 5 wickets. Sanju Samson scored a match-turning 89-run knock, while Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan registered half-centuries each.

Chasing the mammoth total, New Zealand batters were already under immense pressure. They lost their main batters in quick intervals, causing a collapse to only 159 runs in 19 overs; India won the match by 96 runs, a record margin in the final of a T20 World Cup. Jasprit Bumrah was awarded the Player of the Match for his bowling figure of 4/15 in 4 overs. Samson got the player of the tournament award for his brilliant batting performances in crucial knock-out matches.

INR 27.60 crore prize money from ICC as well

“Winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is a moment of immense pride for the entire nation. To defend the title and achieve this feat on home soil makes it even more special. The team played outstanding cricket throughout the tournament under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav and the guidance of Head Coach Gautam Gambhir. I congratulate every member of the squad, the coaching staff, and the selectors for this remarkable accomplishment”, BCCI President Mr. Mithun Manhas said, congratulating Team India.

As the winner of the title race, the team claimed approximately INR 27.60 crore as prize money sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
