There are no doubts that Virat Kohli is a batting legend. With more than 24000 international runs so far, Kohli is one of the best batsmen in international cricket to date. Virat Kohli has also slammed 71 international centuries and 124 half-centuries in international cricket. For almost the last 10 years, Virat Kohli is a regular member of the Indian team.

Kohli also captained India in all three formats for a long time before quitting captainship earlier this year. He is a regular batsman for the team in the one-down position. Because of his successful career, there are a few batsmen who could not excel in their international careers. Here we talk about 3 such players.

3 Indian Players Who Could Not Excel Their International Careers Because Of Virat Kohli

1. Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson is the first player on this list. Samson is a middle-order batsman like Virat Kohli. Samson made his international debut long back in 2015 in a T20I game against Zimbabwe. However, the wicketkeeper-batsman has only played 7 ODIs and 16 T20Is so far.

In ODIs, he has scored 176 runs at an average of 44.0. In T20Is, he has slammed 296 runs at an average of 21.14. However, since he also mostly bats at the no.3 spot, Kohli has not given him any space to capture that spot.

2. Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer is another player who could not excel in his international career due to Virat Kohli. Iyer also bats at the one-down position like Virat Kohli. However, since Kohli holds a permanent place in the playing XI, Iyer has to warm the bench in many games.

Even in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2022, Iyer is not part of the squad and is only a reserve player, since selectors have picked Virat Kohli as the primary option for the no.3 spot.

Deepak Hooda is another player on this list. Like Virat Kohli, Deepak Hooda is also a middle-order batsman. In a T20I game against Ireland in June 2022, Hooda came out to bat at the no.3 spot in the absence of Kohli.

The right-handed batsman slammed a marvellous century in the match smashing 104 runs off 57 balls. He has played 12 T20I games so far and smacked 293 runs at an average of 41.86 and a strike rate of 155+. Currently, Hooda is always part of the India squad in the T20I series. However, due to fewer spots available in the middle order, he often ends up out of the playing XI.
