Indian player Virat Kohli resigned as the Test skipper of India after a loss in IND vs SA Test series. Kohli, who left the T20I captaincy in November last year, was also removed as ODI skipper by BCCI last month. Since BCCI wanted a common skipper for ODIs and T20Is, they asked Virat Kohli to leave ODI captaincy for Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma, who is the ODI and T20I skipper currently, is expected to be given the leadership of Tests as well. Under the new skipper, there are few Indian players whose Test career might come to an end. Moreover, there are also few players who can get a chance to play Tests on a regular basis. In this article, we talk about 3 Indian players who might cement their place in the Test team under a new captain.

3 Indian Players Who Might Cement Their Place In The Test Team Under A New Captain

3. Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer is the first Indian player on this list. Iyer recently played his debut Test match against New Zealand. With fabulous knocks of century and half-century in both innings, Iyer impressed a lot of fans. He also won the player of the match award in the Test.

The Indian Test team is currently facing issues in the middle-order. Batsmen like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajnkya Rahane have largely failed to perform with consistency. In such a scenario, Shreyas Iyer might be given a chance to perform in the middle-order. If he emerges successful, the right-handed batsman might be able to cement his place in the Test team.

2. Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav is another Indian player on this list. Yadav has highly impressed selectors with his patient batting at the middle-order. The right-handed batsman is one of the emerging middle-order batsmen for India.

As mentioned earlier, India’s middle-order batting woes continue with the poor form of the Ajinkya-Cheteshwar duo. Their batting also affected India’s performance in the recent IND vs SA Test series. Hence, Suryamukar Yadav might be given a chance to bat at the middle-order in the Test team. If he does a good job, he might get a regular spot in the Test side.

Washington Sundar is the third Indian player on this list. He is a batting all-rounder who bowls off-spin. Sundar made his Test debut last year during India’s tour of Australia 2021. He slammed a 96-run knock in one inning and bagged the spotlight. In total, he has slammed 3 half-centuries in 4 Tests so far, batting at an average of 66.25. He has also scalped 6 wickets.

With Ravichandran Ashwin getting older, Washington Sundar might emerge as a good all-rounder to replace him in Tests. Like Ashwin, Sundar also bowls off-spin. If Washington Sundar gets more opportunities in the Test team, he might be able to cement his place in the team as an effective all-rounder.
