The term ‘raining sixes’ is most used in the T20 version of cricket, though now the T10 and The Hundred have come in trying to shorten the game even further. But, T20 remains the shortest form of international cricket.
Talking about sixes, while the T20 format sees the ball crossing the boundary line much more often than Test cricket, there have been a few batsmen who with their audacious and ebullient batting style liked to take on the bowlers even in Test cricket, where the challenges are much heightened than white-ball cricket.
We look at the top 5 batsmen with most number of sixes in Test cricket:
Virender Sehwag-91
With 91 sixes from his bat, Virender Sehwag is the record-holder for India in Tests. The dashing opener used to put doubts in the minds of the bowler even before the game began. Known for his attacking style of play, with the help of 23 tons, Sehwag amassed 8586 runs in 104 Tests at an average of 49.34.
He is the only Indian to hit two triple centuries in the longest format. The right-hander has 8273 runs in ODIs to his name and was a key figure in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph.
Jacques Kallis-97
Arguably the greatest all-rounder to grace the sport, Jacques Kallis stroked 97 maximums in his Test career. With his near-perfect technique, enviable poise, and ice-cool temperament, the right-hander aggregated 13289 Test runs at 55.37 and notched up 45 hundreds in the format; that in addition to 292 wickets.??In ODIs, Kallis recorded 11579 runs and 273 wickets.
Chris Gayle-98
Chris Gayle’s dominating power in white-ball cricket is well-known. However, the ‘Universe Boss’ also has a formidable record in Test cricket – 7214 runs at 42.18 with the help of 15 hundreds; he is one of the only four batsmen who have recorded two triple hundreds in Test cricket.
The left-hander has in total whacked 98 sixes in his 103-match Test career. That figure looks minuscule compared to the number of sixes he has hit in all T20 cricket – 1032.
Adam Gilchrist-100
Adam Gilchrist revolutionized the role of a wicket-keeper batsman in Test cricket; the specialist ‘keepers were now forced out by ‘keepers who can bat. He used to score vital runs for Australia while batting down the order and take games away from the opposition in quick time.
Gilchrist thumped 100 sixes in his glorious career. The left-hander averaged 47.60 for his 5570, but crucially his strike rate of 81.95 made significant impacts on the game. While batting at the top in ODIs, Gilchrist batted at a strike rate of 96.94 for 9619 runs.
Brendon McCullum-107
Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum holds the record for most sixes in Test cricket – he has pummeled 107 maximums in his exciting 101-Test career, where he scored 6453 runs at 6453.
The talismanic Kiwi batsman holds the record for fastest hundred in Test cricket – which came off 54 deliveries against Australia in 2016; incidentally, it was his last Test match!
