Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman has reckoned that losing the toss has put India in a good place during the ongoing second Test against England at Lord’s. Considering the conditions on offer, English skipper Joe Root decided to bowl first which has backfired so far.

On a cloudy day at the ‘home of cricket’, Root didn’t want to put his unstable batting line-up under the pump against the Men in Blue’s quality pace attack. This decision could well hurt his team, as India had weathered the storm and reached 46/0 before rain forced an early lunch.

Speaking about the decision, Laxman said that the English skipper went in with a defensive mindset. Drawing knowledge from his experience of having played in the UK – particularly Lord’s – Laxman, in a conversation with ESPNcricinfo, said:

Is it a good toss to lose? Yes, definitely. Because, having played in England and also at Lord’s, until and unless the wicket is damp or the grass is really fresh, it’s always going to be a good batting surface,” he mentioned.

“It’s a very negative or a defensive decision” – VVS Laxman

In the first Test at Trent Bridge last week, the English top-order batsman struggled to get going. The trio of Rory Burns, Dom Sibley, and Zak Crawley couldn’t deal with Jasprit Bumrah and co. This was one of the reasons Root decided to bowl first, as per Laxman.

I just feel that deep down, keeping the brittleness of the England top-order, the overcast conditions, and the quality of Indian fast bowlers, probably that must have forced Joe Root to take that decision. I think it’s a very negative or a defensive decision.

The wicket looks classic. It’s a great toss to lose for India and they are one batsman short – no Ashwin and there’s not much of depth after Ravindra Jadeja. So it becomes important for batsmen who get a start to convert it into big scores,” Laxman concluded.

In the latest update, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul had brought up India’s 100-run partnership during the second session of Day 1.
