Former Indian opening batsman Aakash Chopra has explored Chennai Super Kings’ chances of retaining MS Dhoni next year. MS Dhoni is one of the most iconic players in the history of IPL, having captained the Chennai Super Kings to three titles and been part of Rising Pune Supergiants that reached the final in 2017. Nevertheless, Aakash Chopra feels that CSK might be better placed to spend INR 15 crores on some other player.

While MS Dhoni’s form and ability with the bat is nowhere near to what it was before, the 39-year old remains one of the greatest tacticians. The keeper-batsman has helped the Super Kings bounce back from their forgettable edition last year to suffer only one loss from six games this year. It would be interesting to see whether the yellow army sticks with the former Indian skipper, with the mega auction set to take after IPL 2021.

Aakash Chopra suggests since MS Dhoni might not be around for three years, it may not make sense to retain him. The 43-year old thinks that the Super Kings’ INR 15 crores would go in vain, but acknowledges that there is no big player like him. When asked CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan, he admitted Dhoni is not featuring in his final IPL season.

“MS Dhoni may not play for three years. If MS Dhoni doesn’t play three years, would you retain him? Your Rs 15 crores could be in vain. On the other hand, you may not get a big player like him again,” Aakash told in the Youtube channel.

“I don’t know about MS Dhoni. See, I don’t think it is going to be his final year. This is my personal view and I don’t think we are looking at anybody now,” Viswanathan commented earlier.

It is a bit tough to predict CSK’s three retentions: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra said that it is tough to predict Chennai’s retained players and sees only Ravindra Jadeja’s most likely holding on to his place. The cricketer-turned-commentator underlined that players like Faf Du Plessis and Sam Curran could even be bought in the auction and it’s not worth spending too much money.

“It is a bit tough to predict CSK’s three retentions. Ravindra Jadeja will be my number one choice and my only choice. Because Sam Curran, Faf du Plessis and such players you can get again in the auction, they won’t fetch 12 crores there,” the 43-year old added.
