Aakash Chopra opened up about the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision regarding retired players’ participation in foreign leagues. Aakash Chopra highlighted that this decision was made due to the growing trend of Indian players opting for other opportunities.

In a recent Apex Council meeting, the BCCI discussed its policy regarding players, including retired players, participation in overseas leagues. There are no restrictions on retired players participating in foreign leagues, but the board is considering implementing a change in this policy.

There Is A Demand For Indian Players – Aakash Chopra

In a video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra highlighted that the presence of Indian players is crucial for the financial success of overseas leagues, as the majority of broadcasting revenue comes from India.

“A different policy is going to come for retired players. There is a demand for Indian players in the leagues that have started now because the broadcasters are not interested if Indian players are not there,” Chopra said.

“The majority of the money the broadcasters get comes from India, whether the league is happening in Abu Dhabi, Dubai or South Africa although the South African league has stood up on its own might.

The rest of the leagues are mostly dependent on overseas players. The ILT20 in the UAE was totally based on that,” he added.

They Won’t Take Retirement With Greed – Aakash Chopra

The cricketer-turned-commentator anticipates that the BCCI will implement a cooling-off period for retired players before they can participate in overseas leagues.

“The BCCI will probably put a cooling-off period. This is not happening for the first time. We have seen it in first-class cricket.

If you leave a state to go to another state, they say they will take them back but there is a cooling-off period that you won’t be able to play cricket from anywhere for a year or some duration,” he continued.

“That is kept so that you safeguard your players who did not leave. What the BCCI might be thinking here is that if they put even a year’s cooling-off period, people will not take early retirement, they won’t take retirement with greed and run in the other direction,” he concluded.
