He achieved this feat in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy while playing for Punjab against Madhya Pradesh at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
Opening the innings, Abhishek Sharma didn’t really have any option other than to bat with alacrity as Punjab was given a massive target of 403 runs by Madhya Pradesh. The magnitude of the chase didn’t faze the left-hander; he went on to harrumph 8 fours and 9 sixes in his 49-ball stay for 104 runs.
Sharma brought up his century in 42 balls, which is now the record for fastest ton by an Indian in List-A cricket, only behind that of former India batsman Yusuf Pathan, who notched up his three-figure mark in 40 deliveries for Baroda way back in 2010.
With his 42-ball record, Abhishek Sharma leaped over Suryakumar Yadav’s 50 ball effort in the same tournament a few days ago and also Indian captain, Virat Kohli, who recorded his fastest ton off 52 balls, against Australia in 2013 and now holds the fourth position in this tally.
While Punjab lost the game by a heavy margin of 105 runs, and have been knocked out of the tournament after losing three of their five games, however, in Abhishek Sharma fans will have another youngster to keep their eyes on glued on in the coming future.
Also, a mention for Venkatesh Iyer is much-needed as it was indeed the 26-year-old opener who set up the big score for Madhya Pradesh with his stunning 198 off 146 balls – getting run-out two runs short of a double-ton, days after Mumbai captain, Prithvi Shaw struck this season’s first double century.
