Former wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has predicted the winner of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, which will be played between India and Australia. Adam Gilchrist said that the upcoming five-match Test series will be a very closely fought contest between the two teams later this year.
Team India is the current holder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Australian cricket team has struggled to defeat the Men in Blue over the last decade, including two red-ball series in home conditions. The India cricket team has secured victories in their previous two tours of Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
India and Australia will face off in a four-match Test series. The first Test is scheduled in Perth from November 22, followed by a day-night Test in Adelaide. The next two Test matches will be played in Brisbane and Melbourne. The series will conclude with the New Year's Test in Sydney starting on January 7.
They Are Going To Enjoy The Conditions Here - Adam Gilchrist
Adam Gilchrist said India’s world-class bowling attack will make the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series highly competitive. Gilchrist stated that the Indian bowlers will enjoy the conditions in Australia. However, Adam Gilchrist hoped that Australia would emerge victorious in a close tussle.
“It is going to be another tough series for both teams. Onus is on Australia to prove they are the dominant force at home. India knows how to go away and win overseas. Their fast bowling line-up at the moment is up there, on a par with most around the world. They are going to enjoy the conditions here. Besides, they have a terrifically talented batting line-up. It is going to be very, very even," Adam Gilchrist was quoted saying by TOI via News18.
“Naturally, I am going to say Australia; I hope they get there. But it is too close to call. It will be a close tussle,” Adam Gilchrist added.
Australia won the opening Test match of the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar series by eight wickets in Adelaide. The visiting team was dismissed for their lowest-ever Test score (36) in the series opener. However, Ajinkya Rahane's team made a strong comeback and won the series 2-1, despite injuries to several players.
I'm Going To Say 3-1 To Australia - Ricky Ponting
Former Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting said the Australian team will be eager to prove themselves against India after losing the last two home series. He predicted Australia would win the upcoming series by a margin of 3-1. Ponting expressed confidence in Australia's ability to succeed on their home turf.
“I’m obviously going to tip Australia to win, and I’m never going to tip against Australia. So I’m going to say 3-1 to Australia,” Ponting said on the ICC Review via ESPNCricinfo.
Australia has a clear edge in Test cricket head-to-head records against India. The Men in Yellow have won 45 of 107 Test matches. India has secured victory in 32 Tests, while 29 games have ended in a draw. It is worth mentioning that India failed to secure a Test series win in Australia before the 2018-19 tour.
