Former Australian wicketkeeper batter Adam Gilchrist lauded all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for his historic batting performance against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023. Adam Gilchrist described Glenn Maxwell’s knock as the greatest ODI performance ever witnessed.

Glenn Maxwell scored an unbeaten double-century to help the team triumph in a group-stage match against Afghanistan in Mumbai. He scored 201 runs off 128 deliveries, including 21 boundaries and 10 sixes. He also formed a 202-run partnership with Pat Cummins.

The five-time world champions were in a challenging position at 49/4 when Maxwell entered the crease. They lost wickets in quick succession, collapsing to 91 for seven wickets. Pat Cummins, who scored 12 runs off 68 deliveries, provided support to Maxwell at the other end.

“But I do have to give way to what is the best-ever ODI innings played by Maxi. It is not just that, this could be interesting or an overstatement, I am seeing an innings that could potentially save one-day cricket. I think the way this has been acknowledged. How long will this be acknowledged for, suspect it will be a little while, anyone gets near it, particularly from the match situation,” Gilchrist said.

Adam Gilchrist praised the unique and enduring nature of one-day cricket. Gilchrist emphasized that one-day cricket allows games to be turned around and for teams to rebuild and relaunch when things seem dire.

“If you reflect back at the short history of T20 cricket, there has been some phenomenal stuff, hasn’t it. There’s been miraculous victories, when it’s all lost. This is the beauty of one-day cricket, we have all forgotten. You have got time for the story to be told, you have got games that look like it’s lost, but you can consolidate, rebuild and then relaunch. But T20 doesn’t allow that,” he further added.
