David Warner, on Monday (January 1), stunned the cricketing world by announcing his retirement from ODIs. While the cricketing fraternity was gearing up to bid goodbye to the star batsman in Tests, he decided to bring down curtains on his illustrious ODI career as well.

The southpaw had earlier announced that he would retire from Tests after the third and final Test against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground, starting on January 3. The retirement means the World Cup final against India marked his final appearance in the 50-over format.

He had played a key role in Australia‘s stunning campaign in the World Cup, finishing the tournament as his team’s highest run-scorer. David Warner scored 535 runs in 11 games with the help of two centuries and two half-centuries.

The 37-year old made his debut in ODIs in 2009 and is retiring from the format as one of the most decorated openers of all time. He won the World Cup twice and scored 6,932 runs in 161 ODIs at an average of 45.30, with 22 centuries and 33 half-centuries. Among Australians, only Ricky Ponting has more scored more ODI tons than him.

David Warner to play ICC Champions Trophy?

While David Warner has announced his retirement from ODIs, he has also stated that he is open to returning to the team for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy. He said that he would consider making himself available for the Champions Trophy if he is ‘playing decent cricket’.

“I know there’s a Champions Trophy coming up and if I’m playing decent cricket still in two years’ time and they need someone, I’m going to be available,” said David Warner.

The southpaw will continue to play in T20Is for Australia and is expected to be a part of their squad for this year’s ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. As of now, his focus is on T20 leagues around the world. David Warner has a lucrative IPL contract with Delhi Capitals and was recently announced as the captain of ILT20 franchise Dubai Capitals.

He is also looking to ply his trade in the Big Bash League next season.

“I definitely am keen to pursue playing Big Bash next year. There’s going to be conversations behind the scenes to allow me to do that,” he said.

“Obviously I’ve joined the Fox commentary team next year during the Test series against India, which I’m looking forward to. There’s a BBL window that we’re able to play, and then quite clearly there has been a lot of talk about the ILT20 which will be starting, I’m pretty sure, after the BBL.

“So I would like to play (the BBL) in and around the commentary stuff. I’ve just got to make sure that I’m, one, playing to the best of my ability and, two, not hindering the team’s performances or upsetting the balance of the team,” he added.
