Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir has stated that he would prefer one skipper across all formats. Currently, Rohit Sharma is India's ODI captain whereas Suryakumar Yadav is the T20I Captain. Shubman Gill is being looked up as the new Indian Test captain.
Gautam Gambhir believes that one player would ideally captain the Indian side, but in the current scenario of regular cricket, it’s impossible to have one leader in all formats.

Gautam Gambhir on split-captaincy
Gautam Gambhir stated that working with one captain in all formats is easier than having multiple skippers on the team. Gambhir is also not in favor of split-captaincy in red and white ball games.
The Indian head coach also understands that captaining 10 months in International cricket and then two months in IPL will be difficult for a young player. It will affect the player's mental state and performance in the game.
“Ideally, as a coach, if you ask me, it’s much easier to work with one guy — if you have 1 captain for all three formats," Gambhir said in an exclusive interview with CNN-News18
”I’m saying ideally, but it never happens because you have to realize in today’s day and age, you can’t have a captain captaining for 12 months in a year because you’re playing ten months of international cricket and then you’re playing two months of IPL,” Gautam Gambhir added.
The division of captaincy will remove the pressure from the individual, and the responsibility will be distributed among two people. Players can play their game freely when they are not captaining the side.
“Ideally it’s one, but in today’s day and age, it is always better to have two because obviously that pressure can actually be distributed among two people, and it gets much easier for a player to try and be free when he’s not captaining the side." Gambhir stated
Will Gautam Gambhir work in split captaincy?
Currently, India has two white-ball skippers Suryakumar Yadav is captaining the T20I side, and Rohit Sharma is the skipper of the ODI format.
After Rohit retired from Test cricket, India hasn’t announced the skipper for the red-ball format. Gambhir backs the idea of one skipper for all formats, but SKY doesn't fit in any format other than T20I, and Rohit has retired from the format.
It is impossible to have one skipper for white-ball cricket as of now. But Gambhir may back Gill to take over the captaincy in Test, T20Is, and the ODI format to prepare for future events.
Rohit was the last skipper to captain the Indian team in all formats at the same time. Before him, Virat Kohli was leading the side in all formats.
But after stepping down from the T20I captaincy, selectors chose Rohit over him to have one skipper for white-ball cricket. After all the chaos, Kohli also quits the Test captaincy as well.
For the first time in Indian cricket history
Shubman Gill is likely to become the Indian Test skipper, and it will be the first time in Indian cricket history to have three different captains at the same time.
Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav are captaining the Indian side in ODIs and T20Is formats respectively.
