The Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) new selection committee for the national team after the sacking of Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the role has been revealed. The governing body has appointed a five-member committee, as per reports.
In what is a huge step, the Pakistan Cricket Board has appointed coaches and captains of the team as a part of the selection panel, as per Dawn News. The white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten will be the lead selector along with red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie.
Apart from that, shockingly, the captains of the teams (Babar Azam in white-ball format and Shan Masood in Tests) will also be part of the selection panel. The other two members of the selection committee for the Pakistan National Cricket Team will be Mohammad Yousuf and Asad Shafiq.
Here's the new Pakistan selection panel:
Gary Kirsten
Jason Gillespie
Captain (of that format)
Mohammad Yousuf
Asad Shafiq
This comes after PCB through a press release relieved Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the selection roles after the team's poor performances in the T20 World Cup 2024. The Men in Green were amongst the worst performers in the tournament, which was won by India.
Pakistan had a terrible outing in the T20 World Cup 2024. They faced some forgettable losses in the tournament. The Babar Azam-led side lost their first match against the United States of America in the Super over of the match and after that, their poor run continued.
Pakistan faced a shambolic loss against India National Cricket Team by 6 runs. They were on top of their game for most of the match. But they failed to close the game and went on to suffer the defeat by the barest of margins, which dented their chances to qualify.
Pakistan managed just one win in their campaign during the T20 World Cup 2024. The Men in Green defeated Canada and their last game was washed out due to the rain. This meant curtains for them in the tournament as they failed to go past the league stage and had to return home early.
Gary Kirsten accuses Shaheen Afridi of misbehaving during T20 World Cup 2024
Recently a report in the Pakistan media shocked many as it was revealed that head coach Gary Kirsten accused Shaheen Afridi of misbehaving during T20 World Cup 2024. Azhar Mahmood too was on the same page with the head coach but they didn't take any action against the pacer.
A source close to the Pakistan team confirmed the development and stated that the fast bowler since the Ireland series has been doing the same and also did lobbyism in the team. While talking about the same to Samaa TV, he stated:
”Shaheen Afridi from the Ireland T20I series, England T20I series and the T20 World Cup 2024, has been accused of bad behaviour by Gary Kirsten and Azhar Mahmood. No action was taken against the pacer and he continued to misbehave and has also been accused of lobbying”.
