Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane provided a massive update on his hand injury after the 14-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2025. Rahane, who did not field in the game following the injury, is set to undergo a medical assessment by the franchise's medical team before the next game.
Ajinkya Rahane sustained a hand injury during the 12th over at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday, April 29. He attempted to stop a drive from Faf du Plessis. Rahane walked off the field, and Sunil Narine took over as captain for the remainder of the match. Narine led the Knight Riders to a 14-run victory.
Ajinkya Rahane Provides Massive Update on Hand Injury
After the match, KKR fans were concerned about Rahane's injury and its seriousness. However, Rahane appeared at the post-match presentation and reassured everyone about his condition.
"Not bad. I'll be okay. I'll be fine," Rahane said about the injury (via ESPN Cricinfo).
A KKR spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo that Rahane's injury initially appeared to be minor. However, a detailed assessment was scheduled for April 30. Rahane has scored 297 runs at an average of 37.12 and a strike rate near 150 from ten matches. He scored 26 off 14 balls to help KKR post 204 against Delhi.
We Were Going Really Well as a Batting Unit - Ajinkya Rahane
Rahane said that Sunil Narine's performance in the final two overs was a turning point in their victory. The KKR skipper stated they were about 15 runs short. He added that they required key wickets, which was exactly what Narine delivered in the end.
"204 on that wicket was good, but I thought we were 15 runs short, frankly. We were going really well as a batting unit. But again, you're chasing 204, you know, as a fielding team, you are one or two wickets away, and that's what happened," Rahane said.
Delhi Capitals appeared to be in a winning position at 136/3 by the 14th over. However, Sunil Narine took key wickets of Axar Patel (43 off 23) and Tristan Stubbs (1) in a single over. He later removed Faf du Plessis (62 off 45) and finished with figures of 3/29 in four overs.
Taking Confidence from This Game and Moving Forward - Ajinkya Rahane
Kolkata Knight Riders are seventh on the points table with just nine points from ten matches, but Ajinkya Rahane is optimistic about a turnaround. Rahane acknowledged the comparison to their playoff run in the 2021 season but emphasized focusing on the present.
"That's always been the talk when we are not doing well. But again, it's in the past. For us, what's important is staying in the moment, taking confidence from this game and moving forward," Rahane stated.
Kolkata Knight Riders will benefit from a five-day break before returning to action. They will play their next game against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on May 4.
