Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s future remains uncertain, with his current tenure set to end in September unless the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gives him another extension.
Ajit Agarkar is currently in Sri Lanka with the India national cricket team for the ongoing two-match Test series. After returning to India, the chief selector is expected to attend the Duleep Trophy semi-finals, which will be played at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru from August 30.
BCCI yet to discuss extension as Ajit Agarkar nears end of tenure
Ajit Agarkar’s current tenure as the chief selector is set to end in September, and there were murmurs that the former fast bowler is unlikely to get another extension. Amid this, Bombay HC’s “non-vegetarian tea” remark highlights MCA food safety issues.
As of now, there has been no conversation between Agarkar and the BCCI about extending his term as the Indian chief selector, as claimed by Revsportz on Wednesday, August 26.
Ajit Agarkar's situation could become clearer in the coming weeks, especially with the BCCI Annual General Meeting scheduled for September 18. He became the chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in July 2023 after Chetan Sharma stepped down.
According to the BCCI rules, Ajit Agarkar could continue in the role until June 2027. However, he was reportedly appointed on a three-year contract because he joined midway through the previous selection committee’s term. He was also given a three-month extension in June this year.
The current chief selector received another three-month extension in June this year. If no further extension is given by the BCCI, Agarkar’s tenure will officially end in September 2026.
Shiv Sundar Das set to leave selection panel
Additionally, the selection committee could soon see another big change. Former India opener and East Zone selector Shiv Sundar Das is likely to leave his position. The BCCI could soon advertise the vacant post and begin the process of finding his replacement.
BCCI AGM to decide on ICC Representative and Andaman Cricket
Meanwhile, the BCCI is preparing for an important annual general meeting on September 18 at its headquarters, with several key issues set to be discussed. The BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, has informed all member associations about the Annual General Meeting.
One of the main points will be the nomination of India’s representative to the International Cricket Council. A big decision could also be taken regarding the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The AGM will consider giving associate membership to the Cricket Association of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Amid this, Mohammed Siraj suffers injury, leaves field during 2nd Test vs SL.
The proposal was already discussed at an earlier Apex Council meeting. If the members approve it, Andaman and Nicobar Islands will become part of the BCCI system. The association will not get voting rights with associate membership, but it could get an opportunity to enter India’s domestic cricket structure. At present, 38 teams play in BCCI-approved domestic tournaments.
IPL Governing Council and Junior Selection Panel on agenda
The meeting will also see the election of two General Body representatives to the IPL Governing Council. The BCCI will also add one representative from the Indian Cricketers’ Association to the IPL Governing Council.
The new five-member junior selection committee is another important issue on the agenda. The BCCI had recently invited applications for the positions, and the AGM is expected to approve the new panel.
