All IPL Captains of Delhi Capitals (DC)

Virender Sehwag (2008-2012)

Former Indian captain Virender Sehwag captained the Delhi Capitals in the inaugural season of IPL, and the team did all right by finishing in the top four and qualifying for the semi-final.

Sehwag led the team for two consecutive seasons and filled in on various occasions as a stand-in captain till 2012.

Sehwag led DC in 52 matches and won more than 50% of those, which translates to 28 wins and 24 losses.

Gautam Gambhir (2009-2018)

Gautam Gambhir was a part of the Delhi Capitals for the first three seasons before being released by the team.

Gambhir then came back as the captain of the team in 2018, which was also Gambhir's last IPL season.

The left-hander led DC in 25 matches and won 12 games, while there were 13 occasions that DC found itself on the losing side with Gambhir at the helm.

Dinesh Karthik (2010-2014)

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Kartik has been a journeyman as far as the IPL is concerned. He was a part of DC for a few seasons and also captained the side in a few matches in 2010 and 2014.

Karthik played as the captain of the team in six matches and was able to register a couple of wins.

James Hopes (2011)

Former Australian all-rounder James Hopes, who played for the Delhi Capitals in the 2011 season of the league, also captained the team in three matches that season and failed to register a single win in two of the completed matches.

Mahela Jayawardene (2012-2013)

Mahela Jayawardene was appointed as the captain of the Delhi Capitals for a couple of seasons and led the team in a total of 18 games, winning six and losing 11 of those.

Ross Taylor (2012)

Ros Taylor also led DC in a couple of matches in 2012, but wasn't successful in registering a win in one of the completed matches.

David Warner (2013-2023)

DC was the first team that Warner was a part of before going to SRH. Warmer led the Capitals in 16 matches and won 31% matches.

Kevin Pietersen (2014)

Aggressive English batter Kevin Pieterson was appointed as the captain of the side for the 2014 edition of the league, but led the team in only 11 games before stepping down as the captain of the side.

JP Duminy (2015-2016)

The former South African all-rounder JP Duminy was handed over the captaincy for the 2015 edition and didn't have a successful stint. Duminy also led the team in a couple of matches in 2016 as well.

Zaheer Khan (2016-2017)

Experienced Indian pacer Zaheer Khan captained the Capitals in the 2016 and 2017 seasons and did a decent job in his first year as the captain of the side, as DC almost made it to the playoffs that year.

However, things did not go as planned in the next season, as DC finished sixth in the points table with six wins and eight losses.

Karun Nair (2017)

Karun Nair also led DC in three matches in the 2017 season and managed to win a couple of those before being released by the team.

Shreyas Iyer (2018-2020)

Shreyas Iyer was given the captaincy midway through the 2018 season, and he became one of the most successful captains for DC with 21 wins in 41 matches, and also guided the team to the final in 2020.

Rishabh Pant (2021-2024)

Rishab Pant, who was made the captain of the team in the absence of regular captain Shreyas Iyer, as he was injured during the first half of the season, guided the team to the playoffs.

This was Delhi Capitals' third consecutive playoff appearance in the league, which prompted the management to appoint Rishabh as the full-time captain of DC.

Having said that, 2021 was the only year in which Rishabh was able to make a difference as the captain, as the next two seasons that he played as the captain of the Capitals were forgettable ones.

Axar Patel (2024-2025)

Axar, who was appointed as the deputy of Rishabh Pant for the 2024 season, was promoted the following year to lead the team, and Axar started well by winning four matches on the trot.

But struggled to maintain the consistency as Delhi Capitals lost its way in the middle of he tournament and failed to make it to the playoffs.

Faf du Plessis (2025)

Faf du Plessis led the team at the backend of the tournament in 2025 when the team was in desperate need of a win, but wasn't able to get the job done.
