Punjab Kings (PBKS) qualified for the playoffs after a gap of 11 years in IPL 2025 under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer. In this article, we will take a deep dive into the list of all the IPL Captains of the Punjab Kings.
All IPL Captains of Punjab Kings (PBKS)
Yuvraj Singh (2008-2009)
Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh was the captain of PBKS for the first two IPL seasons and did well as the captain of the team in the first edition, with Punjab making it to the semi-final.
However, Punjab failed to qualify for the knockouts in the next season held in South Africa, which led to Yuvraj being removed as the captain of the side.
Kumar Sangakkara (2010)
Kumar Sangakkara, who was made the captain of Punjab Kings for the 2010 IPL season, didn't taste much success as the captain of the team during that particular season.
Sangakkara wasn't able to make a big difference to PBKS' fortunes as the team finished last in the then eight-team tournament.
Mahela Jayawardene (2010)
Mahela Jayawardene also captained PBKS in one match without a great deal of success as the skipper of the team.
Adam Gilchrist (2011-2013)
PBKS handed over the reins to former Australian wicketkeeper and IPL-winning captain Adam Gilchrist, under whom Deccan Chargers won the IPL title in 2009.
Gilchrist, who led the team in 34 matches in three years, had a 50% record with 17 wins and as many losses.
David Hussey (2012-2013)
Former Australian batter David Hussey also led Punjab in 12 matches and had a 50% win record like his countryman Adam Gilchrist
George Baliey (2014-2015)
The 2014 IPL season was one of the few IPL seasons in which the Punjab Kings played like a well-rounded unit under the leadership of George Bailey, who, with the help of players like Saha, Maxwell, and Miller, guided the team to the final.
However, the same old story was repeated for Punjab Kings in 2015, with the team finishing last after winning three out of the 14 games they played that season.
Virender Sehwag (2015)
Virender Sehwag also led PBKS in a match during the 2015 IPL in place of regular captain George Bailey.
David Miller (2016)
David Miller, who was appointed as the captain of Punjab Kings in 2016, was replaced after a few matches due to the team's poor performance.
Murali Vijay (2016)
Murali Vijay, who took over from Miller midway during the 2016 season, couldn't make much difference to the team's performance as they finished last in the points table for the second consecutive year
Glenn Maxwell (2017)
Glenn Maxwell, who took IPL by storm in 2014 while playing for Punjab Kings, was made the captain of the team in 2017.
PBKS performed much better than in the previous two seasons under the leadership of Glenn Maxwell and were in contention for a place in the playoffs, but lost the last league match by a massive margin.
Ravichandran Ashwin (2018-2019)
As has been the case with the Punjab Kings, they went in the IPL 2018 season with a new captain, Ravichandran Ashwin, at the helm.
The move seemed to have paid off as PBKS started the season with wins in the initial few matches but lost their way in the middle phase and finished the season with six wins in fourteen matches.
The 2019 season was a replica of the previous season, with the team starting well but losing their way at a crucial stage.
KL Rahul (2020-2021)
After a couple of mediocre seasons, PBKS decided to rope in KL Rahul as the captain for the next two seasons.
The decision to appoint Rahul was met with mixed opinions, with many fans saying that he is too defensive as a captain in T20 cricket, which was reflected in the first few games majority of which the team lost by close margins.
Having said that, the KL Rahul-led side did make a comeback in the latter stage of the tournament, but that wasn't enough to guarantee them a place in the playoffs.
Mayank Agarwal (2021-2022)
Myank Agarwal, who led PBKS in 2021, was made the full-time captain of the team for the 2022 season. Mayank's appointment also couldn't do wonders for one of the oldest IPL teams as they finished in sixth position that year.
Sam Curran (2023)
Sam Curran, the English all-rounder, has also been one of the captains of Punjab Kings, having led the side in 2023 with not much success as PBKS won six out of the 14 matches they played that year.
Curran also led the team in a few matches in IPL 2024 in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan.
Shikhar Dhawan (2022-2024)
Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan led the Kings in the 2024 IPL season after having led the team for a few matches in 2022, which saw the same old story being transpired, with PBKS finishing second from the bottom.
Jitesh Sharma (2024)
Indian wicketkeeper batter Jitesh Sharma took over the captaincy from Shikhar Dhawan in one match during IPL 2024.
Shreyas Iyer (2025)
The PBKS owners once again decided to make a number of changes to the squad for the season gone by and picked up Shreyas Iyer in the auction, a decision which proved to be a game-changer for the team.
Shreyas Iyer, along with Ricky Ponting as the head coach, built the team around uncapped Indian players who played a vital role in guiding the team to the final.
