An Unnecessary Wicket: Sunil Gavaskar Absolutely Furious At Rohit Sharma After The Latter Throws Away His Wicket

Legendary Indian opener-turned commentator Sunil Gavaskar has come down hard on Rohit Sharma after the stylish opener once again squandered his start courtesy of a ‘brain-freeze’ moment on the second afternoon of the ongoing series-decider at the Gabba.
Rohit Sharma has flattered to deceive in Test cricket for a number of years now and that has not been because of his struggles against the red-ball but because of the infinite times, he has this sudden ‘rush of blood’ like the one that he has today against Nathan Lyon.
Rohit, as he has done throughout this series, once again got off to a good start where he displayed his class by playing some of the most eye-catching strokes one would ever see; none better than the check drive that he hit off Josh Hazlewood.
Despite having struck Nathan Lyon for a boundary earlier in the over, Rohit decided to go the aerial route against the veteran off-spinner in the same over. He danced down the track but could not get to the pitch of the ball and ended up mistiming it to Mitchell Starc at deep midwicket, leaving the fans as well as former cricketers including Sunil Gavaskar, who was doing commentary at the time, furious.
Gavaskar was visibly disappointed. And, he did not mince his words one bit, as he termed Rohit’s shot as ‘irresponsible’
He also added that given that Rohit Sharma is a senior member of the team, the shot that he played was ‘inexcusable’ as it resulted in an unnecessary wicket for Australia.
Why? Why? Why? That’s an unbelievable shot. That’s an irresponsible shot. There is a fielder there at long oo, there is a fielder there at deep square leg,” Sunil Gavaskar told Channel 7 on Saturday.
“You have just hit a boundary a couple of deliveries earlier and why would you play that shot? You’re a senior player, there is no excuse, absolutely no excuse for that shot. An unnecessary wicket, an unnecessary wicket gifted away. Totally unnecessary,” Gavaskar added.
