Former allrounder Andrew Flintoff is reportedly in contention to become England's new white-ball head coach. Current head coach Matthew Mott is in danger of losing his job after England's failed title-defence in the T20 World Cup last month.
For the second year in a row, England not only failed to defend one of the ICC titles but also performed poorly in the tournament. In 2023, they had a horror campaign at the ODI World Cup as defending champions. The Jos Buttler-led side finished at a disappointing 7th spot in the 10-team competition after managing just 3 wins from 9 games.
Their performance in the T20 World Cup last month was not impressive either. England started the tournament as one of the favourites but could not really managed to hit the top gear as they failed to defend their T20 World Cup title too. They suffered losses against the likes of Australia, South Africa and eventual champions India and bowed out at the semifinal stage.
England eye Andrew Flintoff as head coach:
Following the poor display in two World Cups in the last few months, the ECB is reportedly contemplating a new captain as well as a new head coach in the white-ball format. As per recent reports, not only coach Matthew Mott but Jos Buttler is also at risk of losing his captaincy post.
And the candidate who is the frontrunner to replace Mott as England's head coach is Andrew Flintoff. According to inews.co.uk, Rob Key, England’s director of cricket, wanted World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan to replace Mott. However, Morgan recently distanced himself from the job and Andrew Flintoff has now emerged as the favourite.
Key will be meeting both Buttler and Mott this week before taking the final call. The report also stated that Mott is already resigned to losing his job halfway through a four-year contract. With Mott's fate all but sealed, Flintoff is likely to take charge soon.
While Flintoff has no coaching experience with an international team, he has previously served as a consultant for England's white-ball teams. At present, the England great is plying his trade as a coach for Northern Superchargers in the Hundred.
