Andrew Flintoff out of race to become England's next white-ball head coach after Matthew Mott
Former England captain Andrew Flintoff is unlikely to become England's next white-ball head coach after Matthew Mott stepped down from the role just a few hours ago after meeting England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) managing director Rob Key.
Mott resigned after England's below-par performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 in June, where they lost in the semi-final to the eventual champions India. England were not able to challenge India in the match as they lost by 68 runs.
There was already speculation of Mott leaving the job after England failed to defend the title. In Mott's tenure, England were under-par even in last year's ODI World Cup in India, where they finished seventh in the points table below Afghanistan and failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

According to the reports, it is believed that Andrew Flintoff is not considered a serious contender for the role. Other contenders for the role like Kumar Sangakkara and Mike Hussey were also considered for the role earlier but the board hasn't discussed the potential successors of Mott yet.
Andrew Flintoff was earlier seen as a serious contender for the role. He was there in England's backroom staff in the T20 World Cup 2024, which took place in the West Indies and the USA. At that time, Key clearly said that Flintoff would be an 'excellent head coach'.
“Without question, I think he would be an excellent head coach. He will be a worthy candidate going forward. When that time comes and whoever is in this job, and it might be outside of my time, they would be stupid not to look at him,” Key had told The Telegraph at that time.
“Flintoff is a leader like (Ben) Stokes. Just having someone who knows what it is like to struggle and come out the other end is so relatable to those players. When they have had a bad day, he can explain it," Key further added.
Flintoff is currently in charge of the Northern Superchargers in The Men's Hundred 2024. He is one of the most influential cricketers in England's cricket history.

The allrounder has played 79 Tests for England and scored 3845 runs at an average of 31.77. He was equally destructive with the ball and picked up 226 wickets at an average of 32.78.
In ODIs, Flintoff played 141 matches and scored 3394 runs at an average of 32.01 and a strike rate of 88.02. The 46-year-old picked up 169 wickets in ODIs at an average of 24.38.
Meanwhile, Marcus Trescothick, the former England opener, has been promoted as the head coach of the white-ball team on an interim basis. Trescothick served as the assistant coach of the team under Mott.
Trescothick will serve his role on an interim basis for the home summer, which includes three T20Is and five ODIs against Australia in September 2024.
