Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is all set to get the biggest role of his initial coaching career in the franchise world. After his dream of becoming England's coach was put on hold, Andrew Flintoff has now shifted his focus to Australia.
The Big Bash League (BBL) is already in the news because of Australian players’ frustration over their salaries. Several players are threatening to skip the BBL and take part in the overseas leagues for better pay. Now, Flintoff’s linkup with the BBL should spark excitement among the Australian fans.
Andrew Flintoff set to become Sydney Thunder head coach
Ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League 2026-27 season, Sydney Thunder is all set to hand over the head coach role to Andrew Flintoff. As reported by News Corp, the former England superstar and Sydney Thunder will soon finalize the deal, sparking massive buzz among the fans.
The Sydney Thunder is desperate for a fresh start after back-to-back poor campaigns in the Big Bash League. After finishing at the bottom of the table in BBL15, the club decided to move on from former coach Trevor Bayliss.
Now, the team management believes that Flintoff can completely change the team’s energy and bring a winning mentality back to the side.
Andrew Flintoff’s Big Bash League history and coaching experience make him the favourite for the job
The former England legend was once one of the Big Bash League’s biggest attractions during his playing days with the Brisbane Heat in the 2014-15 season. Flintoff’s aggressive style, fearless attitude, and flamboyant personality made him a fan favorite in Australia.
Since retiring from the game, Flintoff has slowly built his coaching career. He recently worked with the England Lions as head coach, served as a consultant for England in 2023, assistant coach in the 2024 T20 World Cup, and batting coach in Tests for a couple of series.
Flintoff was also the head coach of the Northern Superchargers in the 2024 and 2025 editions of The Hundred competition.
The Sydney Thunder management reportedly feels Flintoff’s modern thinking and strong connection with young players can help rebuild the struggling franchise.
Interestingly, the former all-rounder will be joining hands with the former Australian opener David Warner and rising teenage sensation Sam Konstas. Thunder hopes this combination can finally end the team’s disappointing run after missing the playoffs in the last two BBL seasons.

Andrew Flintoff beats Dan Christian and James Foster for big BBL role
Interestingly, the Big Bash League was initially interested in former Australian batting great Michael Hussey, but he refused to take up the job, and now Flintoff is all set for his big entry into the Sydney Thunder setup.
It is also being said that Flintoff was not the only big name in the race for the coaching role. Former Australian all-rounder Dan Christian and former England wicketkeeper James Foster were also being considered by the franchise for the big role.
But Flintoff reportedly impressed the team management the most and emerged as the top candidate for the head coach’s role.
